silhouette nope Wednesday January 18, 2006 01:48:05 PM lets see here. of all the crews calling themselves hotshot crews there are only a handful that actually live up to the reputation. you know, the kind that can really hang with anyone. I propose we higher the standards for being a hotshot. what does it mean to be a hotshot? to me it means being able to perform any duty on the crew competently. so anyone who can't hike a saw should be written off in my book. Lets get real with our label of Hotshot, it really means something special to many of us.
Stephen McDowell NA Tuesday January 17, 2006 07:35:33 PM I'm a junior at Texas A&M University. I have worked a number of fires in the salt marshes around the gulf coast. Caught the fire bug and am looking for a place to go after graduation.

Ethan, was Chilao the first Hotshot crew or was it Del Rosa? Was EL Cariso the first I.H.C.?
History shows that these are simple classifications, just play on words. Pride and productivity have always come from
the crew Sup., not from a name or tradition. I'm sorry to say, that I.H.C. has little meaning; it is purely Bureaucratic terminology.
May Big Ernie bless the true Sups. and please keep sending them to my fires!
Take care Bro, and give me a call some day

Ethan Estey Tucson, AZ Dalton Hotshots Looking For Old Comrades Wednesday January 11, 2006 04:54:01 PM It's been some time since I was last on the fire line, but the other day I heard some folks from a Cat 2 Crew calling themselves "Hotshots." I grew up with stories of old time hotshots, eventually got on a hotshot crew, and earned that title. Cat 2 and others are NOT Hotshots. "Hot shovel up," let's get this problem solved before all traditions and respect are lost.

dan bakersfield ca los padres/los prietoes looking for the old prietoes crew logo Thursday December 29, 2005 08:17:53 PM my half brother worked for the LP..prietos in the late 70's. He died on the hill. I worked for the Burton on the Cannell meadow/Sequoia in the early to late seventies. We were going to the way of the early Fulton. ...not to be denied. The crew disbanded in about 1980. I went to the KCFD then as a crewboss. The new crew that formed of that mishap was the Kern Valley IHC. What a twist of fate. Some friends went that route. A good crew is what I hear. Now I am a Captain and have 23 years on Bakers. FD.. just nice to look back dh

Worried Hotshot Mel crews Sunday December 18, 2005 09:00:45 AM I saw a lot of mel crews this summer that where calling themselves hotshots when they where not even certified. Also they where taking out of region assignments saying they where type 1 or hotshot, when in fact there is no more such thing as type 1. It is only a hotshot crew or type 2 IA crew. Us in the the IHC community need to put the hammer down on these crews and make things right. Also on little side note I think it is funny that a certian crew gets assignments since his brother works in south ops, all assignments for hotshots crew, but the crew isn't even certified as a hotshot crew.

Bill & Sandy Bowman Patagonia, AZ Laguna Hotshots & Rio Bravo Hotshots Wanting to know more about Hotshots Wednesday July 27, 2005 05:59:41 PM When asked how we feel about the Hotshots, there is not enough room here to express our feelings about what a fine job they did on the Florida Fire in southern Arizona. Of the several things that come to mind, most of all was their willingness to work very hard at a very difficult job. They knew exactly what they were expected to and completed their mission as the professionals they are. Safety for each member was paramount in their approach to accomplish the work they had to do. The comradeship between member and the take care of each other (I am my brothers keeper) attitude is an environment we can all take a lesson from. Thanks to all of you for a job well done.

Leo Smith Ft Wainwright Midnight Suns Monday July 25, 2005 12:33:28 AM I have spent a lot of summers in cal, and I've got to say, you boys (and a few girls) make for some great crews. Hey, what's the deal with the new crews. I've worked with a few of them that were great. Are they getting the respect that they deserve.
John Lucas Cedar Glen, Ca. Del Rosa What I learned in the early 90's is the reason why my family and I still have our homes. And I still get a rush when I see a crew on their way out, to do what no one else can or is willing to do. Hot Shots far and wide have set the standard by which all firefighters are compared, they work out on the sharp end, not seeking glory like some. The hardest few years of my life, which makes the rest a cake walk. Monday July 18, 2005 10:12 AM -0700
